As Rye settles into the new Covid-19 tier 2 restrictions, popular pub the Ypres Castle Inn has announced that it will not be reopening this year.
In a statement on its website the independent historic pub, which hosts Rye's largest beer garden, said: "When the current lockdown ends, Sussex will be in tier 2 of Covid restrictions. This means pubs can only re-open if they operate entirely as restaurants.
"I’m proud of our food, but I believe that pubs sacrifice their soul when they become restaurants. As such, the doors will remain closed for now.
"Have no fear: the Ypres Castle Inn will be back with bells on in spring, when visiting (and running) pubs can be a joyous thing once more!"
