This Friday, April 23, playwright William Shakespeare was born, and it is believed, with a lot of supporting evidence, that he came to Rye in August 1597 to perform for the mayor who had links to the historic Mermaid Inn.
The story of the visit was told at the annual Rye Arts Festival in September 2017 - which hopefully returns with a full programme this year, government restrictions permitting.
