Whistling up bird music

Not all of our feathered friends are known for their songs - but some are, and have inspired music. Kenneth Bird reports

Whistling up bird music
Garden birds 1

As part of the Winter Talks series for the Friends of Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, Stephen Preston will be demonstrating his ability to imitate bird calls this Saturday, March 19.

He is a professional musician of world renown, his specialist instrument being the baroque flute.

In this unique presentation, Stephen uses high quality bird recordings, interspersed with music played on his flute, to examine bird song and how it has influenced composers, while also describing how birds have been exploited for their song.

The venue is the Winchelsea Beach Community Hall, 2:30-4:30 pm. Open to all but donations appreciated.
