Events in Rye to check on water quality and collect litter

What's in the river?
River Rother at Iden

Local charity Strandliners have organised two sessions to test the water quality and collect rubbish from the river Rother next week. Their Community River Watch initiative will take place in Rye and volunteers are needed.

A spokesperson for Strandliners explained why the project to test the water has been set up: “Our aim for this year is is to continue with more extensive training to enable groups to continue monitoring the same areas on a regular basis, promoting an awareness of seasonal changes and knowing what is ‘normal’ so an alert can be raised if there is an unexpected change.”

Rye Community Garden Saturday 31st May, 10 am to 12 noon

A walk to the Tillingham for some water tests. Rye Community Garden is a lovely hidden site buzzing with activity around all things growing and composting, and the group are kindly offering refreshments.

A PlasticBlitz (litter clear up and survey) and a water test. Supported by VolkerStevin who are managing the new embankment works. The survey may be completed along the banks of the River Rother, or if the weather is poor we will take the collected rubbish to the Scots Float site to identify and record for this Rivers Trust project. Egrets and seals may be observed from this site.

Please email events@strandliners.org to register. Car sharing is encouraged if possible.
