The sound of swishing batons and swirling silk will be in the air at Camber this weekend when the UK majorettes' "Nationals" take place at Pontins on March 24-26.

This will be the 37th annual championship of the UK Federation of Majorettes and Baton Twirlers (UKFM), which started off as a small club before becoming a federation in 1975. Teams will be competing from around the country and there will be prizes for the best groups, duos and solos with competitions in Baton, Flag, Wheel, Ribbon and Mace Twirls. The programme includes a Lead Girl Military March, a Majorette March and a “Fancy Strutt”. There will also be the crowning of Miss UKFM, Miss Deputy and Miss Mascot.

The prize-giving presentation will take place on Sunday afternoon under the watchful eye of president and event organiser Eileen Cheshire. The federation, which has its own "Academy of Twirl", has thousands of member troupes who enjoy this fun pastime and embody the federation's motto: help one another.

This is a closed event so there are no day visitors allowed but anyone interested in pursuing this popular activity should visit their website.
