During a house clearance following his father’s death in 2009, Peter Harrison found a cardboard box, previously unnoticed. It was full of photographs, letters and diaries that recorded his father’s life as a medical officer in occupied Germany after the Second World War.

He set about processing and editing these hundreds of monochrome negatives and first-hand accounts and has published them in his book: The Medical Officer's Diary – RAF Lüneburg 1947. They give a unique social and military history of that austere time in the British Zone.

The author, who lives at Northiam, talked about his book and signed copies at the Rye Bookshop last Wednesday September 20. It is available from the shop, price £19.99.
