From Friday, June 7 to Tuesday, June 23 artists in East Sussex and Kent will open their studios to the public. The South East Open Studios (SEOS) printed guide and art trail maps (available from shops and libraries), signpost visitors to free art exhibitions and events throughout the region, celebrating a wealth of artistic talent.
Artists in the towns and villages of Hastings, Rye, Romney, Hythe, Folkestone, Newenden, Northiam, Beckley, Cade Street, Punnetts Town, Battle and Ninfield have grouped together to create art trails.
Art trail maps allow you to plan your day of studio visits, taking in the beauty of the countryside along the way. Guides featuring each participating artist and maps are available from libraries, shops and visitor centres in villages and towns.
Now in its 22nd year, SEOS represents a group of over 200 artists, including ceramicists, potters, printmakers, glass fusers, jewellers and furniture makers. For the curious, this is an opportunity to meet the artist at work and see behind the scenes to appreciate the skill of creating beautiful, hand-made arts and crafts. Many artists exhibit overseas and some are established names in the art world. During June their studios become galleries to showcase their work. Some provide refreshments, demonstrations and work is available to purchase. Some artists sell gift vouchers for workshops if you fancy having a go yourself or giving the gift of art tuition.
Visiting SEOS artists during June is a delightful day out for art enthusiasts of all ages.
