Surely I am not the only Rye resident to experience the frequent disappointment of finding no taxis at Rye station, especially after 6pm in the dark and rain? As there are only two trains (one up, one down) pulling into the station once an hour, could there perhaps be a roster among drivers to ensure that there is at least one cab available to meet them, with possibly another on call if need be? I have never been the only person to alight, and there are often people with backpacks and suitcases, who seem to have booked local accommodation, but have no idea how to get there under their own steam. So on my own and their behalf, here is a musical appeal to all Rye’s cabbies:
SERENADE TO RYE TAXI DRIVERS
[Sung to the tune of Where Have All The Flowers Gone?]
Where have all the taxis gone
From Rye station?
They were there in summer months
Long time ago…
Where have all the taxis gone?
We ask sadly
As we tramp through wind and rain
Dark winter nights…
Visitors and residents
Jostle for position
As we rush, hearts full of hope
To the taxi rank.
But alas, the rank is bare,
Phone calls unanswered…
Where have all the taxis gone?
Loud cries resound
Hitching bags and other loads
On bowed shoulders
With a shambling gait we trudge
Through the pouring rain…
Gentle cabbies hear our plea
We will grovel gladly
If it means you’ll see your way
To be there at close of day!
