The wonderful, atmospheric Lamb House held its annual Christmas evening of words and music on Sunday, December 4. It was dedicated to the memory of "our friend and colleague Howard Davies CBE (1945-2016)," the British theatre and television director, who was married to actress Clare Holman. Clare was taking part in this performance by the Lamb Players, as she did in the summer. It was a pleasure to see her.
The Lamb Players, directed by Jonnie Broadbent, Bobby Delaney, the musical director and Francesca Rowan Plowden, the producer, joined with about a dozen other thespians to present a magical evening, built round "A Visit from St Nicholas" by Clement Clarke Moore. Amusing, thought provoking, audience participating – it really felt as though Christmas had begun. Two sell-out houses listened enthralled and the applause went through the roof. A rendition from everyone present of that wonderful carol O Come All Ye Faithful brought tears to the eyes and a lump in the throat. What a life affirming way to pass an evening.
Ably assisted by Patrick Rogers, with the mulled wine and mince pies, who can wait until next year? Only buy your tickets early before they all sell out. Happy Christmas to you all.
