Work is due to start later this week on a new £1.8 million sea defence project below the cliffs at Fairlight, writes Kenneth Bird. According to a BBC South East News spokesman on Tuesday August 16, 27,500 tonnes of Norwegian granite will be brought in and dumped, effectively joining two existing barriers to complete the protection of this vulnerable coastal strip. Residents claim that the delay in closing the gap has caused the shingle to disappear, with each high tide increasing the rate of erosion.
