The town remembered those who have died in two world wars and other conflicts at the annual remembrance ceremony on Sunday (November 9). A parade of representatives including the police, firefighters, sea cadets, scouts and brownies assembled in front of the town hall at 10:30. Mayor Bernadine Fiddimore inspected the parade and took their salute before the procession marched around the corner to St Mary's church. Among the dignitaries present were Rye's MP Amber Rudd and members of the town council.
Following the church service there was a procession to the war memorial in St Mary's graveyard where the names of Rye's fallen were read out. Wreaths were laid representing, among others, the armed forces, the Royal British Legion, the volunteer sector, and theatrical and catering organisations. There was also a wreath from the Kingdom of Norway which was requested by a resident whose father was a Norwegian ambassador.
Finally, children from local schools and youth organisations laid simple crosses of remembrance at the memorial before the parade was dismissed.
