Walkers who raised large amounts of sponsorship for good causes on this year's local Rotary Walk earned praise and thanks at a lunch-time ceremony held at the Flackley Ash Hotel, Peasmarsh, on September 8.

Robert Holland, president of the Rotary Club of Rye and Winchelsea, presented the club's top award to Janet Sherwood who raised over £800. Her grandson Axal Kelly, in the up to 12 age group, and Amy Roberts of the 2nd Rye Guides received engraved salvers.

Malcolm Turk collected the Charity Shield on behalf of the friends of Rye Wurlitzer for the ninth time. Sally Compton received a £500 cheque on behalf of the Friends of the Rye, Winchelsea and District Memorial Hospital of which she is also vice-chair. Marcia Dart, fund-raising team leader for St Michael’s Hospice, was also handed a cheque for £500.

The walk took place on May 18.

After the awards presentation, I wore my Editor's hat and spoke of Rye News, our fledgling online newspaper which launched in May, and how it is connecting to the lives of the whole community. A summary of the talk can be read here.
