Recession takes its toll

Utility bills making businesses unviable

Recession takes its toll
No signs of life last Sunday lunchtime

The hospitality industry is undoubtedly feeling the financial pressure at the moment, staff shortages are one major issue effecting many bars, hotels and restaurants but the recession is also starting to bite and hard. Utility costs have gone through the roof and since Covid, many of us have become used to not going out as much and due to the restrictions imposed during Covid changed our habits. Eating out is becoming more of a treat than a regular occurrence as for many, disposable income levels are now far less than they were 18 months ago. Something has to give.

Regrettably, The Horse and Cart pub restaurant at the bottom of School Lane in Peasmarsh has closed its doors. It closed on December 1, as confirmed by a hand written notice in the window. It was a very popular and well-patronised restaurant with a very professional team, but to close so quickly and just before Christmas when you would expect trade to pick up, at least until the traditional January lull, just goes to prove what pressure many businesses are under.

Notices in the window.

The Horse and Cart now looks forlorn and last Sunday lunchtime, I witnessed a rare sight: an empty carpark which would usually be full if not overflowing. It's very sad to see this business closed. But what about the staff? Hopefully they will be snapped up by competitors to see them through Christmas at least. And as to the future of the pub, who knows?

According to social media posts the business has gone into liquidation. All that remains is another notice in the window referring anyone who sees anything untoward to call MT Wells Building Ltd, the same name on the two pink planning notices tied to the post outside, applying for planning and listed building consent to convert some of the accommodation to additional bedrooms.
