L/Cpl Ryland receives his appointment from Admiral of the Fleet, Lord Boyce, at Walmer Castle

A proud achievement for Rye Sea and Royal Marines Cadets has been the appointment of L/Cpl Rylan as one of this year’s Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports cadets for 2021.

L/Cpl Rylan received his appointment from Admiral of the Fleet, Lord Boyce KG GCB OBE DL, the current Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, at an investiture at Walmer Castle. He will assist the Lord Warden undertake his duties over the next twelve months.

Petty Officer Phil Whiteman, commanding Rye Sea and Royal Marines Cadets said: “This is a well earned achievement for a cadet who shows the very best that the young people of this area have to offer our community.”

But it hasn’t been all pomp and ceremony for the cadets. With the help of local tradespeople, they have made various upgrades to the unit headquarters at Rock Channel Quay, including concrete works to reduce fire and safety risks, and the reinstatement of the mast step which, hopefully, means they can raise the main mast once again, very soon.

They have also passed all the assessment checks to enable them to offer kayaking on the river Rother. This is the first time in a number of years, they have been able to offer this facility, and it has certainly proved a very popular activity among the cadets.
