Obituary: John Pope

We say goodbye to another friend

Obituary: John Pope
Rye Harbour Nature Reserve

We regret to report that John Pope died on May 8 after a short illness.

With his wife Sylvia, John came to live near Rye at Cackle Street, Brede around the turn of the century, before moving to Northiam. Together, they had been much involved in conservation issues where they lived previously in Bedford, so it was naturally in character that John volunteered to join the Rye Conservation Society committee.

He undertook the task of liaising with the Rother District Conservation Officer, an assignment which required tact and delicacy, both of which he possessed in abundance.

With Sylvia too, he became a keen supporter of the Friends of Rye Harbour Nature Reserve and for many years took his turn in welcoming visitors to Lime Kiln Cottage and subsequently to the temporary information point whilst the Discovery Centre is being built.

John valued his friendships, he was loyal and courteous to all, modest and mild in manner but with a strong enthusiasm for the things he considered important. He was a real gentleman of the old school and we shall miss him greatly.
