Here’s a roundup of some of the other stories making the news in Rye this week.
New police chief
Chief Inspector Simon Yates takes over as the officer in charge of policing Rye, as the new District Commander for Hastings and Rother. His experience includes being a sergeant with the Neighbourhood Policing Team and an inspector working with the Serious Violence Reduction Team.
A spokesperson for Sussex Police said: “Simon has a vast knowledge and understanding of neighbourhood policing and community engagement. His collaborative efforts with various partner agencies set a strong foundation for his role. His career is marked by a dedicated commitment to the community, and positively influencing young people, underscoring his passion and vision for everyone.”
He replaces Chief Inspector Jay Mendis Gunasekera who has been appointed to a new role at Sussex Police headquarters.
Planning for the Future
There’s a chance to find out more about the Rother District Council Local Plan, and what it means for Rye, at an event next week.
The plan, which looks ahead to how the district will look beyond 2040 is available here.
Council officers will be at Tilling Green Community Centre on Tuesday May 21 between 2-6pm.
Up for an award
Congratulations to the Friends of Rye Harbour Nature Reserve who’ve been nominated for a prestigious award. The Friends are among 9 groups from East Sussex who are in the running to win The King’s Award for Voluntary Services, which is described as the highest award given to volunteer groups across the UK.
The winners will be announced on November 14.
Make do and mend
Rye’s new Repair Café opens this weekend. It’s at the Community Centre on Conduit Hill on Saturday May 18 between 10am and 12.30pm. The organizers say you can bring anything along that needs fixing including: clocks, small kitchen appliances, small items of furniture, and bikes. You’ll also be able to get knives, scissors and tools sharpened.
There’s no cost, but donations are welcome.
Spring walk for charity
It’s Rye Rotary Club’s Spring Charity Walk on Sunday May 19. It starts between 9-10am at Rye Cattle Market, with either a 7 mile or 4 mile walk taking in Camber Castle and Rye Harbour Nature Reserve. £10 donation on the day for adult. £5 for under 17. Details here.
