Open for business
The new convenience store on Winchelsea Road opened on Wednesday, August 27. Rye Premier Stores, which also has an off-licence has taken over the building that used to house the gym.

Assets up for grabs
Local government re-organisation is likely to see Rother District Council and East Sussex County Council both abolished and replaced by a new authority covering the whole county.
Rye Town Council says this presents it with an opportunity to acquire some of Rother District Council’s numerous assets in Rye, including toilets and car parks. RTC has launched a survey to gauge local opinions and priorities on what might be transferred saying it believes assets can be looked after better – and services improved – at a local level.

Is there a biker problem?
Proposals for a Public Space Protection Order to prevent anti-social motorbike riding around the Strand will be discussed by at Rye Town Council on Monday, September 1. The agenda for the meeting describes excessive speed and noise as well as motorbikes being ridden on the pavement.
Also on the agenda: the management of weeds on Iron Salts, more on twinning with Montreuil-Sur-Mer, and a request for funding to repair and clean the war memorial.
The meeting will take place at the St Mary's Centre instead of the Town Hall at 6.30pm. You can read the full agenda here.

Call for sites
Local councils in East Sussex have launched an appeal for sites to meet Gypsy, Traveller and Travelling Show people accommodation needs.
Landowners, developers, community groups, and members of the public are being invited to put forward potential sites.
Cllr Teresa Killeen, lead portfolio holder for planning at Rother District Council, said: “We’re working with other councils, and the South Downs National Park Authority, to ensure we meet the housing needs of all our communities across East Sussex. This joint call for sites to identify appropriate locations is an important step in the process.”
The appeal runs until October 5. Further information, including how to submit a site, is available on Rother District Council’s website.
General Trundle rides again
Rye Bonfire Society’s, Neale East is using pedal power to cycle 30 miles this Saturday, August 30.
Forget the Tour de France... this is the Tour de Romney Marsh!
He will be setting off about 11am from the Bonfire Society’s stall at the Tilling Green Waves community festival, raising funds to help the 30th anniversary of Rye Bonfire go with a spectacular bang! There will be sponsorship forms at the stall and donations can also be made via following this link.
