It has been a productive week on the swimming pool front. Rye Town Council has agreed in principle, subject to sighting of the surveys, business plan, and leases, to take on a lease of the whole site from East Sussex County Council, and to facilitate the formation of a charitable incorporated organisation to run the leisure centre as a stand-alone community social enterprise.
Obviously there is very long way yet to go: we have to know that the building is sound, that the finances stack up - and that the terms of a new lease are acceptable to the town. The project managers have spoken with Freedom Leisure this week and continue to make progress.
It was a pleasure to be asked to attend the coronation lunch at Tilling Green Community Centre on Monday, May 8. As always it was excellently organised by Chris Emson and her fantastic team from the Royal Voluntary Service. Over 100 local people attended and were served lovely food and everyone had a jolly good time. A big thank you to everyone who made this happen.
Dav Turpin put on another delightful plant sale at the Buttermarket on Saturday, May 13 in aid of the Royal Marsden Hospital. On this lovely sunny morning it raised around £2,000.
I am grateful to my colleagues on Rye Town Council for electing me to serve a second year as mayor of Rye. The official mayor making will take place on Monday, May 22 at the town hall, with the traditional hot pennies, and Ryebellion drummers at 7pm.
I attended New Romney’s mayor making on Wednesday, May 17 and will be attending the Rye Conservation Society’s annual meeting on Friday, May 19.
