Obviously, we have been very concerned about the threatened closure of Rye’s swimming pool, which was announced to us out of the blue and with no opportunity for the community to look for collective solutions. I and my colleagues are working on this tirelessly to try and find a resolution with Rother District Council and Freedom Leisure, as too is Sally-Ann Hart MP. As soon as we have any news I will of course update you.
It was good to see so many people at the gathering outside the pool on Saturday, October 22, and also at the town council meeting the previous Monday. I’m most grateful to the town clerk, Richard Farhall, who has gone above and beyond in assisting us in this matter, thank you Richard.
Extremely well cared for
In other news, I was delighted to pick the mayoral choice of car at this year’s classic car festival on Sunday, October 16. An extremely well cared for white Corvette caught my eye and I was delighted to award the plaque to Rachel, who had inherited the car from her late mother as it had been in the family for 30 years. A big thank you to the organisers of this festival – it is always a good turnout of car enthusiasts and admirers at the station car park, but I have never seen the town so busy with people who had come into Rye to see the vehicles, a great boost for the local economy.
Support for seniors
Our MP Sally-Ann Hart and her staff organised a great seniors fair at the Rye Community Centre on Friday, October 21 to advise people on how to access support and help across a multitude of services. It was very well attended and a pleasure to meet so many people there.
Helping Ukraine
Anthony Kimber organised another good Ukrainian hub day on Saturday, October 22 for guests and hosts to get together and share ideas and best practice. As always, we are grateful to the Reverend Fiona Gill for hosting this at Rye Baptist Church.
And a musical finale
We had a wonderful gig of sea shanties and songs of the sea at Newenden Church on Friday, October 14. An appreciative audience made for an enjoyable singing experience - and we were able to perform some ballads and classical songs, as well as the old favourites. Thank you for asking us and we hope to come along again to St Peter’s soon.
