Look right, look left - look out!

An accident involving a primary school pupil crossing the car park at Rye Sports Centre highlights the dangerous path for our school children

unsafe to school 2

An eight-year-old primary school pupil was lucky to escape with just bruises when she stepped into the path of an oncoming vehicle near Rye Sports Centre. The accident happened around 8.45am on Tuesday morning (September 23), as she was on her way to school, accompanied by her elder brother. An ambulance was called and she was taken to hospital but allowed home shortly afterwards.

The incident calls into question the safety of the route taken by children attending the primary school and Rye College. Coming from the town, they have to cross the car park entrance at its busiest time. There is no designated pedestrian crossing-place and they tend to wander across the roadway towards the sports centre, usually in groups but sometimes more vulnerably on their own. This state of affairs is unsatisfactory.
