On loan from the British Museum is a cast of the Rosetta Stone which can be seen at East Street Museum for the remaining three weekends of October.
The Rosetta Stone was the key to deciphering ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. Rye Castle Museum is very proud to have the stone cast on view and already a number of school children from the outlying schools have been able to visit, thanks to Rye Community Transport and in particular Pat Hughes who has organised bus trips from Winchelsea and Beckley schools so far, and more trips are arranged for next week.
The children have been able to view the stone close up and hear the story of how and when it was made and later found. The children were then able to write out their names in hieroglyphs.
Do come along to the museum on East Street which is open on Saturdays and Sundays until October 28 from 10:30am to 4:30pm. Entry is free but donations are most welcome to help with the upkeep of the museum.
On Monday October 22 at the start of the half term holiday, there will be another children’s craft afternoon at East Street Museum between 2 and 4pm. The cost is only £2 per child with accompanying adult. Look out for the posters. Children will be able to make Egyptian themed crafts.
