The National Trust says that "we are working hard to reopen many of our places where it is safe to do so. However Lamb House (in Rye) is currently closed."
Built in 1722 by James Lamb, King George I stayed there in 1726 when a storm drove his ship ashore. Henry James, the American novelist lived there and wrote some of his most acclaimed novels there early in the 20th century.
His friend EF Benson also lived there for over 20 years and he is best remembered for his "Mapp and Lucia" novels. Authors H Montgomery Hyde and Rumer Godden have also lived there.
