For the first time in many years, enough interest has been shown for the Club to put together a winter dinghy-racing series. One race is held in each month from November through to March (when the summer series commences); after two races a total of 14 hardy souls have taken to the water.
The last race was held on Sunday December 17, a bitterly cold day with sub-zero temperatures but, alas, no wind. The competitors were towed out to Rye Bay, where it was hoped there might be some wind, but once cast adrift for the start, the picturesque sight of the dinghies by the Port marker at the river entrance was something that might inspire Turner to paint, rather than being the prelude to an exciting race.
That said, it is always good to get out on the water exercising rescue boat skills such as towing (and being towed) – with thanks to Fran Zon and John Kenny for providing the safety boat cover. In the end, though, the Officer of the Day (John Powell) decided to abandon the race.
On return to the clubhouse, the very cold competitors and support crew were met by the cheery smile of Bill Williams behind the bar and hot dogs prepared by Caroline Wylson. Discussion turned to the next race which is also the Rum Race which is always held in January.
The Rum Race is being sponsored by Skippers Rum who provide the prizes. It is an open race and often attracts competitors from other clubs; this year there were 12 competitors and it was won by Phil and Margarete Blurton from Hastings and St Leonards Sailing Club. The 2018 race is being held on January 21 with a start time of 13:00hrs; visitors are welcome to the club to watch and talk to club members; food and drink will be available after the race. RHSC plans to hold a series of taster sailing sessions commencing in April, and the Rum Race will be a good opportunity to get to know the club before then.
