The biggest annual fundraiser for Pett Level Independent Rescue Boat takes place on Sunday August 25. The open day at the boathouse on Pett Level Road runs between 11am and 3pm.
Pett Level Independent Rescue Boat (PLIRB) is an independent lifeboat based in Pett Level, serving the coastline between Camber and Hastings. Our mission as a lifesaving service is the preservation of life and the promotion of safety at sea on the foreshore or in inland waters. We are an entirely independent lifeboat operation, meaning we rely on our own efforts to raise funds for our operational and project costs.
Our annual open day is our biggest fundraising activity which generates vital funds to keep us going. PLIRB gets busier every year and your support helps buy essential PPE, fund fuel and maintenance costs as well as contribute towards much-needed projects.

Our open day is brilliant fun and packed with things going on, including:
- Bar, barbecue and refreshments with homemade cakes and goodies
- Live music all day, with Sarah G, the Pett Slip Buoys and Matty’s Monday Club
- Fun dog show
- Our daft games – Play Your Cards Right and Splat the Rat
- The hugely popular bottle tombola
- Lots of local stalls, plus emergency service teams
- Live sea display
- Grand raffle

We are not affiliated with RNLI or HM Coastguard but work in close collaboration with their local units as well as all other emergency services. Like RNLI, we receive our taskings from UK Coastguard and are extremely proud that our average launch time is 15-20 minutes from the time of paging – all thanks to our local volunteer base who are on call day and night.
As one of approximately 75 independent lifeboat stations across the UK, we are entirely self-managed and self-funded. We receive no public or centralised funding – we raise funds through donations, fundraising activities, grant applications and our sea shanty group –the Pett Slip Buoys.
All volunteers receive a rigorous training programme and have the opportunity to undertake professional qualifications (radio licence, powerboat courses, sea survival, casualty care and first aid). Volunteers can decide how they contribute – boat crew, shore crew, events and fundraising or administrative.
