Heavenly music for St Mary’s

A Dutch choir provided a surprise for visitors and worshippers alike, at St Mary's this week

When members of St Mary’s knitting group assembled for their weekly session on Monday morning, a rare treat awaited them. A travelling church choir from Spijkenisse, near Rotterdam, accompanied by their Pastor (Constand Wassink) and other members of their church, were holding a short service. There were English transcripts of the service, including the address, for those unable to understand Dutch,  but the list of hymns included some well-known English ones.

Soon knitters and church visitors were captivated as the choir of thirty or more sang in beautiful harmony. They had previously been singing in Maidstone and Canterbury, but were particularly delighted that their final act of worship was at the “Cathedral of Rye”  (according to the  service sheet). They have promised to come back again in the future and next time Rye News will be notified in advance so more can come and enjoy this lovely experience.
