A thousand and more gulls could be seen following a tractor as it cultivated the land adjacent to the Winchelsea Beach village hall last Saturday, March 19.
They were mostly black-backed and Mediterranean gulls that were passing through Rye Harbour on their migration to the Netherlands and Belgium, said Ian Rumney-Dawson, a past chairman of the Friends of Rye Harbour Nature Reserve.
This is a sign of summer coming. The Spring Equinox was celebrated on Sunday, March 20 when day and night were of equal length, with sunrise at 6am and sunset at 6pm. And the clocks have to be reset in the early hours of this Sunday morning as British Summer Time begins.
