An unusual hazard at the moment for pedestrians in Rye is the amount of moss accumulating on the pavements. Following the wet winter weather, the roofs are verdant green providing ideal nesting material. It is surely too early for that though. The jackdaw in the picture on the dentists’ roof in East Street is more likely pecking and looking for insects on which to feed and dislodging the moss in the process.
Once on the ground however, the moss and earth create a slippery surface, and one which could conceal the uneven paving stones. The old proverb could apply “a sweep in time saves broken bones.”
