October is pink month – ie, breast cancer awareness month – and Siren and Pearl, the lingerie boutique in Rye's High Street, will be hosting a Pink Friday on the 31st, donating 10 per cent of the day’s sales to Breast Cancer Care, the only nationwide support charity helping the hundreds of women who wake up every day to the harsh reality of breast cancer. The disease is the most common cancer in women, with more than 50,000 diagnosed each year in the UK, but with advances in research, new treatments, earlier diagnosis, breast screening and greater awareness, more people are surviving, says the charity, and the five-year survival rate is more than 80 per cent.

Friday’s customers will be greeted with a glass of pink fizz to enjoy while they sift through designs from Marie Jo, Empreinte, Conturelle, Wacoal and Prima Donna among other top-notch brands of underwear and swimwear. Look out for the special offers.

Any unwanted bras can also be donated: simply drop them into the bra bank. They will find a new lease of life in developing countries across Africa, where bras remain too expensive to produce. For each tonne collected, BCR Global Textiles will donate £1,000 to the charity for dedicated research to improve detection and survival.
