Gardening for Ukraine

A very English garden is opened for charity

At the plant stall with Matty (far right)

Matty and Richard Holmes welcomed visitors last Saturday to their lovely garden overlooking the Brede Valley. It was a perfect summer's day and the garden was looking at its best, thanks to a lot of preparatory hard work by the hosts. The event was held in aid of the Ukrainian Relief Fund.

A perfect setting for tea in the garden

In addition to the well-known favourites, there were unusual plants and shrubs that Matty had collected and nurtured over the years. Her skill as a plantswoman was further demonstrated by the abundantly loaded plant stall. This proved as great an attraction as the tea and cakes also on offer.

Richard said afterwards: "It was such a pleasure for Matty and me to be able to share our garden with so many very appreciative visitors, on such a beautifully sunny afternoon (weren’t we lucky!).  With some donations still coming in, the total sum raised for DEC Ukraine so far is exactly £900.  Very gratifying!"
