From Fodor's Go To Top Places in 2023.
Europe:
Crete, Greece.
I can understand that choice… “frolic on pristine beaches… birthplace of the Minoans…”
And then, quite suddenly…
Rye, England.
Yes. That’s right. Our wonderful, gorgeous, little town of Rye is rated one of Fodor's top 40 destinations on earth to visit.
Fodor's has been around for over 80 years and it is still a favoured travel book to carry with you. Helpful in finding, as they describe it, “every tip, trick, hack, and deal you could ever dream of”. For Rye to not only be the top British location in their Go To Top Places of 2023, but also top five in Europe (including UK), is simply … well… deserved!
Unfortunately, the secret is now out, and about a billion more people are just starting to read about it too. You can go to their website to see what they say about Rye, including their insider’s tips. They did spell our dear river Brede incorrectly, but I am not going to hold that against them.
So, it made me think about what a perfect day in Rye looks like. And here are just a few reactions I received from others to build on those insider's tips:
- Wandering the little streets, uncovering gems in the antique shops. Stops along the way in my favourite coffee shops. Hayden’s – I love the views from the windows at the back and everything is organic and locally sourced. The Cobbles Tearoom – homemade sandwiches and a lovely courtyard. I remember visiting my friend’s family who grew up there. (Theresa)
- This year? Rye Jazz Festival. Enjoying wine and potted lobster, listening to the Kino street bands on Layfield’s terrace with friends. Then to another concert at St Mary’s later. (Diane)
- On a gorgeous day? It starts with picking up food for a picnic. A salad box and beverages from the Rye Deli. Cheese scones, no, those amazing chorizo quiches from The Whitehouse. Final stop to the Rye Fish Market for their ready-cooked lobster and crab. Then down the cycle path to Camber for a picnic and long beach walk. Back to Rye in time for a Knoops hot chocolate (I like the Sao Tome 70%). (Paula)
- On the allotment. Flask of tea and a cake. Maybe fish and chips from Marino’s with you later. If you return in time from your shopping and socialising. Let’s eat it on the seaward lookout point, overlooking the river as the sun goes down. (Husband).
- When you take me toy shopping at Adams. Ice-cream (we have found four different locally-sourced vendors so far). Sweets (I take her to both shops), children’s playground (The Salts). Then more ice-cream. (Freya, aged 4).
