Rye is a famously literary town, with EH Benson, Henry James and Rumer Godden being three notables. But the ball was set rolling when John Fletcher was born in Rye in the 16th century, the son of the firebrand rector! The leading Jacobean playwright died 400 years ago in London and was buried in what is now Southwark Cathedral. Fletcher had taken over from William Shakespeare as the playwright for the King's Men troupe of actors, and had collaborated with the Bard to write Two Noble Kinsmen. To commemorate the famous son of Rye, the Festival is screening Two Noble Kinsmen at the Kino with a performance recorded in 2019 at Shakespeare's Globe in Southwark. The screening is on Monday, September 15 at 3.00pm.For more details on this and other events at the Festival go to ryeartsfestival.org.uk.
