In July 2019, the Laefer Saxophone Quartet came to play for the Brickwall Music and Arts Society in Beckley Church and made an indelible impression. Others thought so too and it has taken nearly five years for them to find time to return. Now firmly established as an especially ‘dynamic’ and ‘exciting’ ensemble, they are commissioning new works and giving masterclasses in university music departments, as well as for the Clarinet and Saxophone Society of Great Britain. Despite this and their immensely busy performing schedule, they have found time to perform the first concert of Brickwall Music and Arts Society’s new season. This will be in Beckley Church once more, on July 4th, and not in the Drawing Room of Brickwall House, Northiam.
Have you heard of the composers Denise Odishko and Helen May Butler? Fear not; they both feature in this Laefer concert and they take their places beside some much more familiar names, such as those of Gershwin, Stravinsky and Poulenc. A good deal more information can be found on the Brickwall Music and Arts Society website (www.brickwallmusic.org.uk) but for those seeking musicality of a very high order and an instrumental combination that is not very often available, this is an event not to be missed. Try something new. The Church has ample parking, will be clearly sign-posted and there will be a cash bar. Tickets via the website are £18 and £20 at the door. As, very long ago, young people used to say: ‘Be there or be square.’
