A new group to help people living with dementia - and their families - starts at the Hub on Rye Hill on Monday February 24. The monthly Dementia Social Group will run monthly on the 4th Monday of the month from 2.45-3.45 and has been organised by Gracious Care and the Music Well. Coffee and cake will be provided.

Dementia is an umbrella term for a range of degenerative brain disorders. It affects the person with the diagnosis and importantly, it impacts their family and friendship groups. Not everyone will suffer dementia but in our lifetime, half of us will, which is a sobering statistic and one of the reasons why the Hub on Rye Hill are so passionate about increasing the understanding and awareness of the condition.

At the point of diagnosis it feels like entering a very dark and lonely place. The Dementia Social Group is for anyone with an interest in dementia. The experts from Gracious Care are on hand to offer practical help, advice about dealing with the decline of an individual and will work to dispel some of the myths which have built up.

The Music Well are a local group of musicians who have offered their time to make the hour go with a swing. They'll lead sing-a-longs and perhaps there will be dancing on the patio on sunny days. As the sessions go on, they will tailor their activities to meet the needs of those attending, e.g. using memory books, arts and crafts to list a few.

The Hub has several separate spaces that can be used for discussions and advice in peace and quiet, not being disrupted by other activities. It's been said before that dementia is a journey. The Hub on the Hill will be at your side when anyone needs help.
