Rye News launched its first petanque competition on the Strand on Saturday September 13th and the winners were Matt, Steve and Millie from the William the Conqueror pub.

The writers' team was led by Rye's Own's Jimper and joined by novices Charlie Harkness and Dan Lake from Rye News who lost their first game 13-2, not that they understood the scoring!

Play was temporarily suspended when Charlie dive-bombed the jack and it flew up in the air and off the pitch. The second game was only lost 13-7 (so the writers team had improved) and they ended up in fourth place. The final featured serious contenders as the tape measure came out to check how far boules were from the jack.

Dennis Leeds-George presented the trophy on behalf of Rye News, and the unlucky losers now have twelve months to practise for next year's tournament.
