The end of the tunnel is in sight

Coming down slowly
The work of dismantling proceeds

The dismantling of scaffolding around the George hotel is progressing slowly. Lion Street was closed to traffic this week for four days from November 8 to allow removal of the steel framework which had shrouded the building for much of the last two years.

In the photo can be seen the large containers which had been installed above the front façade. Filled with many tonnes of water, these had helped stabilise the structure when there were real fears that the whole front elevation might collapse to the ground.

The work and the obtaining of planning permission has taken longer than expected. Alex Clarke the proprietor welcomed this progress as a positive step, but said "there is still lots to do inside so we don’t have a date (for re-opening) to announce yet.
