There were fears part of Cinque Ports Street could have been closed until after the bank holiday following work on power cables under the road. The road, which forms part of Rye's one way system, reopened in time for Friday morning. It had been shut for three and a half days.
Teams from UK Power Networks were called to the scene on Monday, May 19. A large hole was dug in the road exposing cables. Power was turned off to a number of homes and shops because of a faulty piece of underground network equipment.
The work was listed as continuing until at least Tuesday, May 27 on both road signs and on the One Network website.
The road was closed near Rye DIY from the junction of Station Approach to the Ferry Road turn off.
A spokesperson for UK Power Networks said: "Our engineers are completing electricity network repairs within a road closure on part of Cinque Ports Street, Rye, to maintain reliable power supplies for local homes and businesses. We apologise for the inconvenience caused by this work, which started on May 19. Our team worked through the night and we will return the work area to normal as quickly as possible."
