Easter Sunday is the most important day in the Christian calendar and for the Church of England it is central to both belief and worship. St Mary’s Rye held its Easter service at 10.30am at which Jess and David Angell organised the making of Easter baskets by local children who had such fun creating them.
At its core, Easter Sunday commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead three days after his crucifixion. Hope, renewal, and eternal life are the key messages as Lent ends and is succeeded by the joyful worship of Holy Communion and sometimes by baptisms. There were no baptisms at Rye St Mary’s so the Rector, Paul White, invited all the children at the Easter communion service to gather around the font where they were all signed with the holy water.
David and Jess Angell commented: “We were delighted with the crowd of children that came to St Mary’s to decorate Easter baskets. The children’s corner was bubbling with creativity and conversation making it a joyful Easter Sunday service.
“Following the service we headed to the Gun Gardens to put the baskets to use in our annual St Mary’s Easter Egg Hunt!”
Darcy Bruno was visiting Rye and was welcomed by the other children making their baskets and at one point one could join in a very interesting conversation with Georgie and Isabel as they retold the story of the crucifixion and the raising of Jesus from the dead. These children might only have been six years old but they certainly knew the story well.
