Bowls club host Belgian visitors

Discovering a very English pastime

Bowls club host Belgian visitors
Post 'match' line-up, with our friends from Belgium

Last Friday, a group of twelve visitors from Belgium, organised by Patrick and Dominique Fortems, spent the morning at Rye Bowls Club being shown the basics of lawn bowls.

This very English game was a complete mystery to our visiting friends, but they soon got to grips with the technique and enjoyed a fun time on The Salts.

The morning, rounded off with a mini international ‘competition’, with the visitors demonstrating their new found skills.

To top off the visit, some of the Rye members were treated to a ‘spin’ in the selection of classic sports cars the visitors had arrived in, before they went on to visit Sissinghurst Castle, as part of their stay in the south east.

Members are often asked about lawn bowls by tourists visiting Rye, and we are always happy to explain and sometimes give then a little go on the green. It’s a pleasure to encourage visitors to our lovely town, especially those from abroad.

Remember, if you are local and want to give it a try, you are most welcome - whatever your age.

There are ‘roll-ups’ held on the club green at The Salts each Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings (May-Sept), starting at 10:30am, unless there is a match on that day.

Just turn up and introduce yourselves. We will provide bowls and someone to show you the ropes, just wear flat shoes please. Alternatively phone the club captain on 01797 280457 for more information and to arrange a time more suited to you.
