Arsonists to gather at Mermaid

And the next lot is a portrait of a well known arsonist. But he's not wanted by the police. However you may want him, and he is to be auctioned off this Thursday to raise funds for Rye's Bonfire Society. Seana Lanigan reports

Marina Kim's portrait of Jimper Sutton is one of the lots in the Bonfire Society auction

The annual auction to raise funds for the Rye & District Bonfire Society will take place on Thursday May 14 in the Tudor Rooms at the Mermaid Inn. This year, lots include meals at the George and the Gallivant at Camber, bed and breakfast at Jeakes House, a return flight from Lydd to Le Touquet, artworks and antiques.

The auction is the Bonfire Society’s biggest fundraising event of the year, typically bringing in about £4,000 of the £10,000 required to stage the spectacular conflagration and procession.

Pictured above is one of the lots, a portrait of Jimper Sutton, the Life President of the Bonfire Society, painted by Marina Kim. It is displayed in the Roche Gallery on the High Street.

Tickets are £5 including a glass of wine and viewing starts at 7pm with the auction beginning at 7:30.
