Appledore football fest is a winner

The first Appledore Football Fest successful with hundreds of players, spectators - and some football

The first ever major football event, held in the village last Sunday Auugust 1, proved to be a big success with over 800 players and visitors. Plans are already in place to extend the Festival into a 2-day event next year.

The day kicked off with the men's competition, with teams coming from all over Kent and East Sussex - although the eventual winners were the surprise package Lilys Ink, from Ashford. In the final, they were pitched against a strong Dover Athletico side, who beat Ashford Cavaliers in their semis. But Lilys Ink, with Ryan Carter and Dan Newby in fine form, ran out  3-1 winners, to keep the cup in Ashford.

The afternoon started with the youngsters taking centre stage for the Appledore Juniors Open Day, for parents and children wishing to sign up with the Club. A tournament then took place against teams from the East Sussex league for under 8 and under 10 age groups.

Although the Appledore sides gave a good account of themselves - never having played together before, it was the experienced East Sussex Select who took the trophies in both age groups.

Appledore Smugglers hope to soon have a few junior teams playing this season and would like to hear from players, parents and potential team coaches. Contact Jim Kelly telephone: 07801957584.
