Fierce pirates and brigands abounded on the Strand Key at Rye for this year's Maritime Festival last Sunday. Held somewhat later in the year than its predecessors, it proved really successful for most of the contributors including Rye & Winchelsea Rotary Club.
Although the amount of cash raised by Rotary was slightly down on last year, this was explained as being due to experimenting with new ideas and equipment. In previous years the club have worked as a human fruit machine, which proved to be somewhat of a spectacle as well as a money raiser. This year it was felt that a new approach was needed. However the organisers are now wondering in view of this year's comments if a further review for Maritime 2015 might be needed.
There was a moment of drama heavily tinged with humour when two Rotarians from the Romney Marsh Club came on to the stand and spent £6 between them, winning four bottles of wine. All concerned could not believe the outcome as the bottles were transferred from one Rotary club to another, with promises that they would be raffled again for good causes. Rotary president Robert Holland (pictured) thanked both his fellow members and the public for all their help and contributions this year.
