Rung out by Town Crier Rex Swain, in full costume, 150 properly dressed cyclists set out on a fundraising ride for two charities organised by Rotary and Rye Wheelers. Derrick Holman reports. Tour de France it was not, but Tour de Rye it most certainly was.
The eighth Fun Cycle Ride organised by both Rye and Winchelsea Rotary Club and the Rye Wheelers has proved yet another success. Close on a 150 riders took to the road to complete various routes from 10 to 100km.
Seen off from Market Road by Town Crier Rex Swain (pictured below) surprisingly most riders opted for the 100 km ride as the weather was more than suitable for a long cycle as the photo of riders passing across Monkbretton Bridge shows.
The event, which is growing in popularity each year raises much needed cash for local good causes. This year the recipients will be Rother Responders and the Kent,Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance Trust. Rye Rotary will announce the amounts which are donated to each charity at a later date when the complete amounts of entry fees and sponsorship monies are collected.
